Do you have a vision of your perfect outdoor heaven, but not sure how to achieve it? We look at some tips and advice on how to create the perfect outdoor space.
Before you begin any work on your outdoor area, it’s important to have a realistic view of the space you have to work with. How do you use the space currently and what’s missing? Write out a list of “must haves” and make sure you take plenty of measurements so you know what you have to work with.
Merge the out with the in
Creating an outdoor space that blends seamlessly with the indoor is a fantastic way of making your interior space feel bigger, brighter and contemporary . Try sticking to similar tones and keep the style of the outdoor area consistent with the interior of your home. It will create the feeling of another room to the house, instead of a distant space you occasionally use when entertaining.
Have a Focal Point
Well-designed indoor rooms typically build off one particular element, for example, a piece of furniture or artwork enabling the rest of the furnishing to support that piece. The same principle applies to outdoor spaces. Try centring a water feature, fire pit or large potted plant and build your area around that particular piece.
Outdoor living may seem carefree and casual, but to add comfort to the mix takes plush textiles and comfortable furnishings. A wooden bench might seem durable and ideal for outdoors but it will not appear very inviting to use.
Your outdoor space will feel as good as it looks when you choose loungers, chairs and sofas . To create extra visual appeal and comfort, try adding large cushions- the more the better!
Give your outdoor space some evening ambiance by adding the right amount of light. Turn off harsh spotlights for gatherings; instead, try lanterns, candles or fire pits to add atmosphere. You can also use strategically placed lights to call attention to your “focal point” or other decorative features.
Try Affordable Updates
It’s easy to get sick of colour schemes and patterns; fortunately, it’s relatively inexpensive to upgrade and swap outdoor living accents. Try adding new cushion covers, refreshed slipcovers and colourful pot plants to instantly freshen up the space. But make sure you only purchase UV resistant fabrics that will stand the test of time (and weather) until it’s time for your next upgrade!
