How to spend your WA Day long weekend

With a long weekend coming up here in WA, and a sunny forecast on the horizon, we are excited to get out there and enjoy this weekend to its full potential!  Need some inspiration? Check out these activities around Perth that will make sure you’re celebrating the founding of the Swan River Colony in a thrilling manner!

For the whole family

Trying to find activities that suit the whole family can be a challenge in itself, let alone finding something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. These activities are free and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Head down to the Perth Cultural Centre where a range of activities will be available on Monday June 1st from 10am – 4pm.

Activities include:

  • Circus skills workshops
  • Stilt walkers
  • Paper Planes – a movie
  • Live street art
  • Puppet making

For the sporty ones

We might be on holiday, but that doesn’t mean we are taking a break from our sport. If you’re into Aussie rules football, check out round 10 of the WAFL at the following locations:

  • 30 May

2:15pm Claremont vs. Peel Thunder at Claremont Showgrounds

2:15pm Swan Districts vs. Perth at Steel Blue Oval

  • 1 June

2:15pm East Perth vs. West Perth at Medibank Stadium

2:40pm East Fremantle vs. South Fremantle at ATOM Stadium (East Fremantle Oval)

Alternatively, on Sunday at Domain Stadium, you can see West Coast take on Geelong from 2:40pm. The game also features the AFL Indigenous Round which is held each year in recognition of the important contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers have made throughout the history of the game. The match will raise funds for the Wirrpanda Foundation and tickets are available via Ticketmaster.

If AFL is not your game, head to NIB stadium instead to watch the Western Force take on the Reds in a rugby union match to support the McGrath Foundation. The game starts at 5:40pm on Sunday and tickets are also available via Ticketmaster.

For a bite to eat

Of course there are a range of different dining options throughout Perth but if you’re thinking of heading out for a bite to eat, why not make the most of the weather and head to an eating spot with a view!

The iconic King’s Park has a range of different options including Fraser’s Restaurant, Botanical Café and Stickybeaks Café, where you family can enjoy a yummy meal whilst enjoying the CBD view, botanical gardens and playgrounds.

Yet, if you’d prefer a coastal view head down to Fremantle or Scarborough Beach where there are a range of different dining options. Most have a nice ocean view and a coastal breeze to help you get that breath of fresh air you’ve been waiting for all working week!

For an adventure

Thinking of embarking on a weekend adventure? It’s a long weekend, and the perfect time for a small trip away. If you aren’t venturing too far from the nest, why don’t you consider an escape a little closer to home? WA has a range of different destinations you could visit! Consider heading south, hitting spots like Margaret River, Busselton, Albany, Dunsborough, Bunbury and Pemberton. No matter what you are up for – hiking, whale watching, fine food, wine, surfing or fishing, the south west has it!

Otherwise, you could head north up the coral coast hitting Jurien Bay, Kalbarri, Monkey Mia or Exmouth. While these destinations are popular in the summer months for their snorkelling, diving and swimming with dolphins, they are also great throughout the winter months! Make a point of stopping at Carnarvon for their Tropicool Festival which features a range of activities, food, performances, fresh produce and workshops with most of the attractions being free!

For a spot of hydration

Thinking of hitting up some of Perth’s nightlife spots over the long weekend? There are plenty of options after the State Government’s major liquor license reform in 2007 but if you’re looking for a fun, unique experience, why don’t you hit up one of Perth’s themed bars?

Hula Bula Bar in Perth has an exotic tiki interior décor, and an array of delicious cocktails, the finest rums and funky vintage tunes, what more could you ask for?! The Hula Bula Bar is the perfect place for a casual drink, celebration or tropical holiday – there is no better time to try it out than this long weekend.

Alternatively, you could also visit The Classroom – a bar inspired by the cherished memories from school. The bar is filled with a great collection of old artefacts and prides itself on brilliant food, innovative cocktails and rare wine and beer from around the world. This is definitely a place you should add to your to-do list!
